Default Console Help and FAQ

I'm here to start up this thread again for all ya'lls needed help and frequent questions for 360's and other console related issues.
I will be posting every guide that I have made within this thread and hopefully ya'll can mange to find what you are looking for in order to fix your issues that you are experiencing.
Hope Everything here helps.

If there is a question that is not answered and Doesn't have a guide already made for it... just post your question here and I'll answer it shortly.

COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
Thanks.

Power Supply Guide/Help

For starters heres how it goes:

1) The light on the power supply unit will illuminate orange. The orange light indicates that power is still present in the power supply. The light on the power supply remains illuminated orange until you disconnect the power supply from the wall socket.

2) If your power supply illuminates red, then external power supply has detected a fault. The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either the console or to the power supply itself. The power supply will turn itself off under the following conditions:
• When there is too much current
• When the voltage is too high
• When the temperature is too high

3) The light on the power supply unit will illuminate green when the xbox 360 is on and has source of power as well as correct flow of electricity, good ventilation/temperature, and finally the voltage of the outlet is correct.

The precautions on the 360 posses nearly the newest technologies to ensure the safety of your xbox console. Thus, if there is ever a instance were something goes wrong, you should try to correct the issue immediately as you will probably re-encounter the experience in the near future... in conclusion possibly damaging your xbox.

SOLUTION

If your power supply is not functioning as it should, and it is giving you a red light (more than once). Then things you might want to try is:

1) direct connection to a power outlet (eliminate all other connections such as extension cords and power circuits/boards).

2)If step 1 does not fix your issue, then you may try a different power outlet.

3) Finally, if step 1 and 2 do not work then you should try calling Microsoft (1-800-4MY-XBOX) and see what they would recommend doing in order to obtain a new power cord. If they have a warranty that will replace the power cable that has been damaged and you apply to that, go ahead and have them replace it. If not then try to ask them where you would be able to find a new one because this is what you need to do.
If these problems re-occur with your new power supply, then there may be an issue with your console in which case you should once again call Microsoft to replace your console.

Icons On GamerTags
(Not really Related to consoles or accessories but WHAT EVER. Its still a guide.

1) Go to bungie.net and sign in
2) Go to "My Stats" on the menu bar
3) Then hit personal info and from there you scroll down and change your settings for the appearance of your gamer tag on xbox live.

heres a Screen Shot that may help.
NOTE::: This is from different sections of the same page so that I could fit it all in to one SS. IF you have an issue finding the specified fields.... you need much more help than I can offer.

RROD/Freezing Issues

Well, if your console isn't giving you any error messages or anything then your probably OK for this once... But in all respect to the 360's console protection cues, your best bet is that your console happened to overheat for this once or you had a good bit of dirt on a specific part of your disk. If you are experiencing these problems over and over again then you should consider calling your 360 console in; otherwise there are a couple of precautions you can take.

They are as follow:

1) Make sure that your consoles ventilation is not blocked in any way. IF this requires moving your console then please do so while you have it turned off.
2) Make sure you disk is clean and that you disk is not being scratched at all by your console (I know its hard to tell on this one but you just have to pay attention to the noise that you console may make during game-play and also try to check it every now and then for new scratches).
3) Make sure that the console is not giving you any error messages such as the RROD (Red Ring Of Death). If it has given you this error message then you should really consider calling your 360 in or looking at the guides that have already been made in order to find a solution.

Some off to the side cases:
1) If your power supply was giving you an issue, your xbox would not simply freeze but it would shut down. There is a chance however that the "battery reserve" in the large block connection of your power cord had enough charge to keep it running during a voltage drop. In which you console would most likely not be able to continue working and freeze. But, you would most likely get an error message on your consoles power supply.
2) Un-synced fans - this can become common with the consoles (as everyone knows about the overheating issues). If you notice your fans on your console to be making a lot of noise then you should really consider trying to get your xbox console replaced if it starts giving you error messages because these problems do not ever correct themselves. Although, if you are not under warranty any more and wish to continue using the console, I would recommend that you buy fans to place around the vents on your console to reduce the chance of overheating.

Overheating Issues

Possible reasons why you could be experiencing such problems:
1) The console does not have proper ventillation
2) You power supply is running "hot" (this is usually accompanied by the power supply giving you errors and not allowing it to boot as well... see Power Supply Guide).
3) Fans on the xbox are not 'in-synchronization'
3b) Your console makes loud vibrating/humming noises in which may be persistant or periodical
4) Excess dirt and dust may have entered your console (dirty disk, etc) and thus your console has unwanted/needed insulation in which could cause overheating.

Fixes to Overheating Issues:
1) Make sure the console is turned on its side and not standing up (this allows the console to 'breathe' more and thus you have better airflow reducing the overall temperature on your xbox console).
2) Do not have the console in any inclused areas (this would include cabinets, etc which could restrict heat from leaving the area in which your console is stored)
3) Do not place any of the console hardware on carpet! This is always a bad idea with any electronic device that produces heat
4) Try NOT to use fluids in order to cool the console down as this may void your warranty.

If your fans are not in synchronization:
1) You can try tapping on the back of the console as well as what ever device you have added on... be careful however because this could further jam the fans.
2) Try turning the console to different angles as this may place the fans on a proper axis in which they can spin freely
3) If you are UNDER WARRANTY and it is the system fans (not the add on) that is causing the noise then you should consider calling your console in.
4) If you are NOT UNDER WARRANTY you should consider buying USB port fans and or some some sort of cooling mechanism to place under or around you console. If you can exert air away from the object place the fan or cooling device in the back of the console.

I'm sure I haven't thought of everything here, however I will add onto this guide as I come across more of the issues that people have had. If I am addressed with the issue I will manage to find a fix for you problem or give you the proper advice for that complication.

If you get a loud sound from your Xbox, it COULD mean one of the following:

1. Disc was dirty, in which case the result would be a considerably scratched disc.
FIX: Clean the disc as much as possible, try to stay away from harmful chemicals to save your disc. Go to a store and purchase a disc cleansing kit.

2. The console was at an angle in which the disc drive could not hold the disc in place (other words the disc would be tilting and moving inside the console).
FIX: Clean disc properly, set console to a different position in order for the disc to lay flat and thus the problem should be solved. If it continues, call costumer service.

3. Fans in your console could be out of synchronization, this normally causes a loud noise from the back of the console. This is also known to send vibrations throughout the console and can also disrupt the pattern of the disc. This could result in scratching the disc and or damage of the cooling system, finally overheating. If your console does overheat it will send you the Ring Of Death, The three red lights.
FIX: Generally turning off your console and turning it back on will re-synchronize your fans and will also re-synchronize your disc. So the error should not continue, if it does, and or if you get the three red lights, call customer support.

THERE COULD BE OTHER ISSUES THAT I HAVE NOT COVERED WITHIN THIS MINI GUIDE, IF THIS HASN'T ANSWERED YOUR QUESTIONS THEN ASK SOMEONE ON A DIFFERENT FORUM OR CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Xbox Customer Support: 1-800-4MY-XBOX
The only reason why I know these things is because I've been through it all, and I've taken apart and put together several consoles. I strongly advise that if your console has any issues that you do call customer service before any specific warranty becomes void.

NOTE: THE THREE RED LIGHTS WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR THREE YEARS OVER YOUR EXISTING WARRANTY

NAT Settings and Networking Issues
NAT Settings For Linksys Routers (Possible Other Routers)

Those of you who have trouble joining parties and such, even though your router says its open, it probably isn't. They settings can be changed, but if you didn't change them through the routers page then they probably haven't varied at all.

OTHERS HAVING NAT PROBLEMS
If your having problems with NAT settings, I've found a decent way of going about it but only for linksys routers (For sure). I haven't actually finished it because my dad is in India and I can't get his pass word from him BUT if you do have a linksys router heres what you do.

Go to a Internet Browser (ie: FireFox, IE, Netscape, w/e)
Type in 192.168.1.1 and or 192.168.1.100 (there could be other extensions in which case check halo3forum.com [search DMZ] look for Author: Scott).

After you've logged into your routers settings pages follow these steps:

1. Hardwire any PC to the router and access the router’s setup page.
2. To access the setup page, verify the IP address of the router and type it on the address bar of the Internet Explorer.
3. Please click on Start and then choose Run, type CMD then press go. On the black screen, type "ipconfig" then press Enter. The Default Gateway is the IP address of the router.
4. Launch your Internet Explorer 5 or later version or Netscape Navigator 4 or later version.
5. On the Address bar, please type the IP address of the router or the default IP address which is 192.168.1.1, then hit Enter/Return.
6. A login screen will appear. Please type “admin” for the password and leave the username blank or empty then hit “OK”.

Note: If it doesn’t take admin as the password you might have changed it when
you have run the RUN ME FIRST CD that came with the router, so please try other
passwords.
If you cannot remember the password, please reset the router and reconfigure it.
Please write down your password to avoid unnecessary reset and reconfiguration.

After accessing the router’s setup page, please follow these steps:

1. On the setup page, click on the "Wireless" tab and please take note of the SSID or the Wireless Network Name. I recommend that your Wireless Channel should be on "11" and click Save Settings.
2. After that, please click on the "Wireless Security" sub tab.
3. If the Security Mode is WEP (64bits or 128bits), take note of the value under the Key 1. That is your password or network key (it is case sensitive).
4. If the Security Mode is WPA-Personal or TKIP, please take note of the value on the WPA Pre-Shared key. That is your password or network key.

Since we are on the router's setup page, let us open specific ports to allow the
Xbox to access the internet with the router. Here is how to do Port
Triggering:

1. Click on Applications and Gaming Tab.

2. Under "Port Triggering" type in "Port One" under Application field.
3. For the "Port One" Application, the start and end port should be 88 to 88. Then click on the enable box.
4. Type in "Port Two" under the second Application field.
5. For the "Port Two" Application, the start and end port should be 3074 to 3074. Then click on the enable box.
6. Scroll down and click on Save Settings and Continue.
WHEN SETTING UP A NAT TYPE: you should not have to set up a static IP or anything along the lines of a static IP. Other FORWARDING techniques only help you get to the SETTING pages and thus this is where you change the settings in order to OPEN your NAT Settings.

BEST METHOD ::: Use your HOME COMPUTER, or the computer
DIRECTLY connected to the router that you are using for wireless play. This is the
only true way that you can access the connection settings of your home wireless
network.

Another source in order to open your NAT Settings can be found on H3F here

Disk Issues (Dirty and what-not)

For disk problems, go to a local store and get a disk cleaning/repair kit. They
generally have ones that will work for more than just one use (in which case you
can repair your disk more than once I RECOMMEND THIS).
IF your still having problems with getting MORE THAN ONE DISK to read then go to
a local store and purchase a CLEANING DISK. This is a disk that you can INSERT
into a drive and in turn it will clean the internal components of a component that
READS THE DISK. I have used one of these on the old Xbox's and it did help my
console to near perfect performance after it wouldn't read a disk with about 10-15
tries!

THESE DISKS SHOULD NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY
This guide is not complete and will be worked on in the near future.

Let me know if this was any help to you!
FEED BACK IS ALL I ASK.

All Guides by yours truly, Arsonism

Dang... my xbox was red lighting about 2 weeks ago. I called 1 800 4 My XBOX and they told me to do abunch of stuff. Turns out that the Power Cord has an orange light. Well, they said that was probally the promblem, made me try a diffrent outlet, and what not. Never did get it to work so I had to mail it in to get it fixed. I still had my warranty so they said they would send me a new one for free once they got my old one. Well its been 10 buisness days and 15 reg days and still no return. They said 4-7. I checked the process with the refrence number and it got to the destination in 1 day. So that means they have had my old cord for 14 days now and have yet to send me the new one. I tried calling, but they said they couldn't do anything. What a pain in the ass. I wanna play Halo =(.

Thats just some of the downfalls to the system that Microsoft designed... Overall they have a very stable piece of hardware... there are just some instances in which they cannot avoid specific malfunctions. Nothings perfect man. Sorry to hear that your mailing stuff got messed up.

At least now you know who to come to when you have issues with your consoles! haha. I'll tell everything that they would most likely tell you as well as some more that they don't WANT to tell ya Dominated.

So yes, here is my NAT guide once again (to confuse and baffle people to the end of times).
I don't have the time to pretty it all up right now but I will do so when I'm conscious again in the (well, later) morning.

Hope ya'll can survive with my not-so-pretty guides for a day.

Thanks Everyone

And remember to ask questions if you have them so that there will hopefully be more guides to come in the future.
