Default Resolving the Server Issue

Post any and all ideas towards resolving our server issue here please. Turns out I do not have the knowledge to run my own server off of my brother's computer. I am willing to work will people to get a server going off of someone else's however. I just can't afford $150 a month and I don't want to be spending your guys' money all the time, I'd rather be giving it to you. I know yall miss contest season?!? I sure do.

Sorry to hear that that idea didn't work out, but may I ask why? Did you have to host the server at your own house?

At the moment I have no ideas, I may idea if anything plausable comes to mind. Good luck on your hunt though.. lets just hope freewebs isn't the future home of QsK

Freewebs won't ever be the future of QsK, don't worry. You kinda informed me in our welcome back thread of how hard it would actually be, so I haven't even tried looking into it, thx for that info though. But if we have to stick to this system I'll always be able to scrap money I suppose, but i'd rather not do that.

I miss having contests!! I mean, we could have contests and everything if I didn't have to pay a server fee every month. And that's definitely a plus to the site traffic, and it's also a plus considering I'm an admin who would actually pay the recipients their money.

..unless the server was like wherever your brother works / does his server stuff? Maybe he could look after it for you? I'm sure you've already thought about it, but I don't know much so sorry if this isn't good infomation.

If you need any server infomation, I'd forward it to my friend and ask him about it. He doesn't host so I would say about getting a discount and him looking after it, but he just works with his Dad and sets up servers for companys, like he'd come around and install it, but doesn't host, which is a bummer.

My brother owns a chain of local Applebee's restaraunts lol, so that might be kind of weird. He was going to let me buy his computer off of him for very cheap at set it up as a server. But you explained how hard it would be to set one up from home so idk if I could do that.

Yeah, especially as it's your first time - unless you had someone on the site that is good with servers who could assist you? Maybe ever your brother?

But you do need to make sure your internet connection is reliable.. and if this site is going to hosting videos you may need a 'better than a normal household' internet connection. Midget's looking on so maybe he can share some light, you may be able to get this set up though. Maybe just get hooked up with someone in your town that can repair it ASAP as soon as it goes down? Techincal support person, or something.

It's plausable for you to do it, but you need to make sure you've taken everything into account. I mean I might being negative here, but I'm sure you don't want QsK to go down if something bums out and you have no clue. If you are going to do this, your brain may hurt from all the server stuff you'll be looking into, haha!

You can't buy a tarabyte and make us the shit? I don't know how this works, but anyway we can just design our own page and run off a new computer. 150$ a month could be spent toward alot of good hardware to run a site.

At least you have a useful relative. How do I get into your family? Free Applebee's is only second to free lap dances.

I woulda gave ya about $150, but we had a situation that required lots of cleaning, my head being shaved, and my Daughter having to sit still for about 6 hours.

It is one thing to say, you want to host your own web server and it is another thing to actually do it.

King, my friend basically said:

"When being your own web host you should first know your way around computers and a basic knowledge of operating systems. Be knowledgeable of technical terms, understand how to setup a server environment ( DNS, IIS, Apache) have basic knowledge of scripting languages and databases (PHP, Perl, MySQL, etc.), be familiar with the hardware/technologies/server components your going to buy. If not, have someone around who can teach you this, or assist in you setting up the server and 'be on hand' so you can phone them or whatever and ask for help.." - if your Brothers ok with this, ask him for more infomation and guideance, or even like a local Computer Shop that you know sells servers and things like that so you know you can trust them, thats the best bet to get infomation. I wouldn't follow a guide from the internet - thats just me, we all know it's not a valid source, haha! (Brother or Electronics/Computer shop!!)

He also said don't have the server on the carpet, near curtains, keep it on a surface that is static free. From his experience you don't want the components to receive a static charge and short circuit. I lol'd.

Also, my friend had a site that was run on a Windows server, and with a Windows server you cannot run .PHP's, like this page right now (newreply.php) - so your going to have to install a Linux server, so I guess theres no arguement against Linux vs Windows, so thats the first big step solved! Haha! just my own experience right there
