Default Help!

So, today when I turned my computer on, I was a bit surprised to see only my desktop background, and nothing else.

Currently, this is what my computer screen looks like:

I don't know what the hell happened, but I'm assuming I got a virus of some sort. I ran search and destroy, and avg, and both said I was clean. So I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone know a way to fix this? Any recommended virus cleaners I should try? I really want to keep reformatting as a last option. Any help would be amazing.

It could be that the dwm.exe or explorer.exe files are malfunctioning. Run a disk check and see if there are any errors on your hard drives.

Run > Explorer.exe in taskmanager. I got a regfile that will fix it, wait a second.

Edit; I couldnt find the file I was looking for, but try this instead.

Just to let everyone know.... While surfing through the internet I found someone who solved this problem and has a way to fix it. There are 2 registry keys in the registry that are causing the problem. It affects the explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe files.

This is the key that needs to be deleted...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe

Once these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come back to life.

That happened to me...it was freaky stuff. I just system restored a few times and deleted a lot of junk in safe mode, eventually it went away. :\
