I'm sure alot of people had Guitar Hero 3 as a Christmas present this year. But before you pick up the guitar and start jammin', let me shed some light on GH for you.
Why don't you just buy a real guitar!?
Shut the fuck up. It's a video game.
I'm good at real guitar. Will that help me?
Yes, to an extent. Real guitar players can catch onto a rhythm quickly. However, this does't mean instant FC's. Would an American Soldier rape in CoD4 right away? No. There is still that gaming expertise one needs to gain after hours of playing.
I was good at Guitar Hero 2. Why am I having trouble playing Guitar Hero 3?
Guitar Hero 2(and the original) and Guitar Hero 3 were developed by two different companies; Harmonix Music Systems and Neversoft, respectively. Obviously the same game code cannot be duplicated, so there will be a timing issue with veterans of the first two Guitar Hero games when playing the third. After a few songs it should balance out.
How come when I watch youtube videos, it looks so much faster?
That's because most people who are pretty good at the game use
hyperspeed. There are 5 different stages of hyperspeed in Guitar Hero 3, one through five with the higher the number the faster the speed. Don't be fooled though. Hyperspeed makes it easier... once you get used to it. Right away it will be hard, but with hyperspeed adding a greater distance in between fret notes, you can react quicker. Whether it's cheating or not is strictly left to opinion. I use it because it makes the game more fun, and I think it's accepted by most people that it's not cheating.
For the life of me, I cannot beat Lou on Hard!!!
If you've already beat all the hard songs except Lou, then move on to expert. That or work on 5 starring all of hard. There is no sure way of beating Lou on hard except for just out playing him.
I can't beat him on Expert either!!!
This is about luck. I'm sure there are people who simply out played him, but there is an easy way to beat him. This is where you need to get lucky. Right after you get your first powerup, Lou has a string of green notes. You need to activate your powerup as soon as he hits those. If it doesn't work, then start over and try again and again. Or keep playing if you can save up three powerups and unleash them all at once on him.
What are Hammer Ons and Pull Offs(hos and pos)?
Hos and pos enable you to hold down upcoming notes to really nail notes. People don't tap each fret back and forth and strum each and every note when they play. The notes without the black ring around the top do not need to be strummed. But you must land the preceding note every time to continue along without strumming. You can also hold down notes from left to right(green to orange), thats a hammer on, and pull offs go right to left(orange to green). This only works when playing single notes, not chords.
Will using the whammy bar increase my points?
No. It only adds a unique sound. But if you whammy it while playing a held down star power note, your star power meter will fill faster or give you more.

All the songs? Lou can be easily beat with that tip I put in the first post of the thread. But the other songs... well, good luck. If you can get good at up and down strumming, it really helps. Although Number of the Beast I can only do good when I down strum the entire time. For One, save your star power. Unleash it before you start flashing once you get to the solo. I don't care how many star power phrases are wasted because your meter is already full. Save it for the solo.

Position 1 and Position 2.
Position 1 is the default, with your index finger on green and pinky on blue. Position 2 is just index on red and pinky on orange. IMO, its ALOT easier to use your index to go back and forth to green and red rather than your pinky to blue and orange.
I hope this helps some people out. Also, if you see anything I answered wrong, don't be afraid to tell me. Or if you can add any other questions and answers, go ahead and post them.
Good jammin'.
