USA-Europe Latency
This is not a bitch thread. I was curious to know how fast a connection could hypothetically be across the pond.
New York-London: 5,567.11 km= 5,567,110 m
Speed of Light: 299,792,458m/s
If you divide distance by speed you get time, which is 18.56 ms, but ping gives round trip times so your ping would be 37 ms.
Another thing to note is that light travels slower when it's not in a vacuum, and the speed through the best optics currently available is 35% slower than vacuum.
That means your best possible ping is about 57 ms.
Then you have to consider the fact that data has to navigate different networks which means computers in the middle have to process where it's going, current ping times aren't going to improve a whole lot. Considering we're getting numbers as low as 150 ms from some of the tests right now.
Edit: YAY!!!!!
