There is never a guarantee that any console won't overheat.... which consequently sucks hardcore.
Microsoft has, however, tried to put out these new consoles with different builds in order to try to prevent hardware failures and issues. Some of the new hardware has backfired, as some may have noticed out in different countries. There has been a couple of lines of products that Microsoft has tried and shot out to different people to see if the new hardware is durable enough to stand everyday gaming conditions.
Some of them, didn't do so hot.
Right now, I believe in England, they are having a MASSIVE recall of all the 360 Elite consoles that have been sold within the last 4-6 months. The hardware that they put in the consoles simply did not hold up as well as they had expected.
You can see traces of different hardwares throughout console generations, CD Drives were generally the very first thing that they experimented with; now has evolved to flat out redesigning the entire console.
Simply, your answer is... there is no flawless/perfect console, and thus, there is no guarantee that these are going to perform better than anything we have seen before
